INDIVIDUAL ADULT COUNSELING :

People commonly come to counseling because they:

  • are feeling depressed and/or anxious
  • want to cope more effectively with stressful situations
  • struggle with personal and professional relationship conflicts and resentments
  • are confused about their feelings of tension and fear
  • have self-defeating and/or self-destructive thoughts and behaviors
  • are experiencing various life transitions that bring them feelings of grief and sadness
  • feel trapped in their current relationship or work situation
  • desire help in resolving past and present family conflicts
  • are emotionally and physically drawn toward someone outside their marriage relationship
  • find it difficult to communicate with significant others in their lives
  • feel guilty about past and/or current behaviors

From the first counseling hour, we will work together to define your particular concerns and design a counseling process tailored to meet your needs and your desired outcomes. Counseling sessions will involve active listening and sharing, questioning, exercises and dialogue. Assignments between sessions are offered to strengthen your insights and skills.

Through counseling, you will build your own inner resources to address your specific concerns, be able to put your experiences and emotions together in new, more constructive ways, and develop the skills that will help you continue to resolve issues as they come up in the future.

COUPLE COUNSELING

Couples seek counseling because they:

  • are frequently angry with one another
  • are unable to resolve particular complaints and grievances
  • feel unable to be heard and respected
  • are considering separation and/or divorce
  • are struggling with the aftermath of an extramarital issue
  • feel distant and alienated from each other
  • are seeking pre-marital counseling

In couple counseling, the focus is on the relationship. A safe counseling environment is provided to meet the overall goal of developing the skills to de-escalate your conflicts and to re-establish a mutually respectful emotional connection in your relationship.

The process is not about assigning “blame” to either partner but rather is about helping to create a new emotional bond whereby you and your partner can feel safe and secure again. Specific issues can then be addressed more effectively, with more compassion and even humor.

During this process, we will examine verbal and nonverbal communication styles that have impacted the feelings of trust in your relationship. We will work to increase your understanding of how to listen and communicate more effectively. In-office counseling exercises and out-of-office assignments are offered to assist you in developing new patterns of sharing and problem solving.

BUSINESS-RELATED CONSULTATION

Professional misunderstandings, employer-employee conflicts and difficult work conversations are often confusing and not easily resolved. Business relationships that become contentious can generate considerable stress for you individually and sometimes for your family relationships as well.

A focused counseling approach will support you in thinking through your work complexities and exploring, in a confidential, unbiased setting, alternative perspectives, approaches and communication styles that will help you resolve issues in a more positive way.

Business-related consultations are goal-oriented and directed toward achieving resolution within a 3-5 session timeframe.
